Supervisor Bevan Dufty has endorsed Robert Haaland for District 5 supervisor. "Harvey Milk wouldn't let this opportunity [to elect a transgender candidate] pass," Dufty said. ...

while i completely support robert - perhaps endorsing a candidate based on their gender isn't particularly productive? it may serve to make a point, and increase visibility, and sure, that's a good thing . . . but electoral endorsements, particularly from those already serving, should be based on issues, and public service. so there.

  2. It's disappointing when identity politics trumps policy and positions. I'm disappointed that Bevan is helping to put someone on the board who will be hard to distinguish from Eileen Hansen on the issues!

I find Dufty's recent channeling of Harvey Milk to be just one more disturbing public display of his many neurosis. Aside from the foolishness of supporting someone solely on the basis of their gender identity, I think Milk would roll over in his grave knowing that Dufty--a moderate, calculating and ego-centric politician--was using his name and legacy just to further his own political ambitions.
